First academic workshop on the Institutional Foundations of Rural Health held at Tsinghua University

The first academic workshop on the Institutional Foundations of Rural Health was held at Tsinghua University on 17th June 2007.

It was sponsored by the China Health Development Forum and IDS (Institute of Development Studies, UK), and organised by the Department of Sociology, Tsinghua University. Researchers from the POVILL and Future Health Systems RPC participated. The participants introduced findings of their studies from the viewpoints of sociology, political science and public policy analysis and shared issues arising from their research.

The workshop had a positive influence on the application of institutional analysis to rural health policy research in China by identifying researchable issues and encouraging additional research in both projects.

Participants agreed on plans for academic communication. The China Health Economic Institute (CHEI) will organize a follow-up workshop in October, to prepare for a special session at the Global Health Forum and to promote the cross-disciplinary communication.

The main participants and the themes of their presentations were:
